Nicknamed The Black Pimpernel due to him being able to run away from The Apartheid government for more than 17 Months, Nelson Mandela had already become a hero to people all over the world however the sun would not shine down on him for long.
On the 5th of August 1962 Apartheid police spotted a suspicious Austin Westminster and prompted it to stop at a Road Block on the R103, just outside the Little Town of Howick KZN – Down the road from today’s Midmar Dam.
Knowing the police were looking for him, Mandela posed as a chauffeur however the police were onto him and he was arrested on the spot. This arrest started one of the most famous trials in political History (The Rivonia Treason trial) and made Nelson Mandela the most famous political prisoner in recent history. Nelson Mandela went on to spend 27 years in Prison at the Infamous Robben Island.
It was at this spot that the “Long Walk to freedom” started and from this spot, South Africa was launched into a new era. Many overlook this Historical area, we choose to embrace it and celebrate all the surrounding attractions.
Nelson Mandela was later given the “Freedom of Howick”, we hope that you enjoy this in his honour and enjoy your visit. We encourage you to visit the sites, old and new and enjoy the warmth and hospitality of the businesses on this historical route.
R.I.P Tata, We hope to live up to your wishes in a Peaceful and Democratic South Africa.
